Why is it hard to change?
Some people change easily but some take time and more hard work to change their old, and deep-rooted behaviours. This little article might going to give you a bit more understanding:
Why people relapse? Why many people gain so much weight after their diet?
If you want to have a long lasting change in your behaviours and habits then it is time to look at how your mind works and change it from the bottom. If you want to change your old behaviours so that you don’t have to yo yo-diet again then you need to change your beliefs and behaviours and that is a bit more complex than just following a strict diet and exercise plan for X weeks. You will change with it without a doubt but what are you going to do after if you haven’t changed you beliefs, behaviours and values? You are most likely going to go back to your old behaviours, as they are hard-wired in your brain. You know those times when you feel depressed and you go and binge eat as you associate the emotion (feeling low) with binge eating, when you feel anxious you go and drink or smoke etc. You had one old bad behaviour that you have now replaced with a new one (for example, many drug addicts become over eaters, alcoholics become smokers etc.)The previous addiction has just replaced with a new one but the root of the problem was never treated and that’s why the mind is so important when it comes to changing your body, changing the way you want to behave with others etc.
So let’s talk about the three minds:
Imagine your mind as a computer.
The conscious mind (like a keyboard and a monitor) is in use only 5-10 % of our day and this is how we take in the information from the outside world.
The subconscious (the RAM) any recent memories are stored here for quick availability, like phone numbers, the person you just met etc. It also holds your current recurring thoughts, behaviour patterns, habits and feelings.
The unconscious (the hard drive), our memories are stored here since birth. This is the first mind we are using when we are born the others develop as we age.
Your unconscious and subconscious as well uses these programs to make sense from all the data that you receive from the outside world and make sure you survive. The logic of these two minds is that if it worked in the past and you survived, then it will help you get through similar situations by the same means, no matter how misguided, painful, and unhelpful the results may be to you personally in the outside world. So, if your old behaviours worked for you to survive it will keep doing it until you realise it is not serving your health. When you realised it then it is possible to make change, but until you are happy with your old behaviours it won’t happen.
To make long lasting changes and get to the root of the problems you need to get into your subconscious and unconscious mind and make changes there.
It is not easy as you have lived your life this way since you were born but it is not impossible and there are many techniques to help you change your habits.
